Types of Wormer for your Horse or Pony

Wormers are known by a variety of brand names, trade names may change, new wormers are marketed. The list of active ingredients is the main information you need to decide which wormer to administer to your horse or pony.

There are four chemical groups, some may be combined for dual- and multi-wormers. The groups are: macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin & moxidectin), benzimidazoles (fenbendazole & mebendazole), pyrantel embonates & praziquantel. Their uses for treatments are:

• Macrocyclic lactones treat: bots, small red-worms, large red-worms and lung-worms.
• Benzimidazoles treat: round-worms, large red-worms and small red-worms.
• Pyrantel embonates treat: large round-worms, large red-worms, small red-worms, seat-worms, pin-worms & tape-worms.
• Praziquantels treat all three kinds of tape-worm.

Combination wormers that contain Praziquantel are available with either Ivermectin or Moxidectin, which work together to treat tape-worm alongside general worming solutions. Sometimes, certain strains of worms are stubbornly resistant to one chemical group therefore you may need to try another one - check the ingredients, not the brand name!

Eliminating Dust & Breathing Easy - Horses & Humans!

Hay should always be of the best quality possible but dry hay, in particular, is a source of dust and may create breathing difficulties for some horses, ponies and their humans. How can airborne dust and mold spores which can trigger allergies and make owners, grooms and horses wheezy, be reduced?

If using hay forage, it should be steamed or soaked for at least half an hour so that spores swell and stick to it. Haylage is less dusty. For horses that are known to be sensitive to dust, mites and spores, hay forage could  be replaced with a chaff or high fibre cube.

Bedding alternatives to hay include:

• Rubber matting
• Dust-free shavings
• Shredded paper and cardboard
• Wood pellets, providing they are soaked and managed correctly.

Almost a year has passed since we last posted on our blog. 2012 Olympic Equestrian Events

Just a year to go ... These are the only Olympic sport events where men and women compete against each other on equal terms and where humans and animals compete together.

Venue: Greenwich Park

Eventing
Dates: Saturday 28 July – Tuesday 31 July
Featuring: dressage, cross-country and a dramatic jumping finale - an all-round test of Equestrian skill.

Dressage
Dates: Thursday 2 August – Thursday 9 August
Dressage events test the horse and rider's discipline and elegance as well as athletic prowess.

Jumping
Dates: Saturday 4 – Wednesday 8 August
Jumping includes navigation of a short course with precision, speed and perfect technique. Obstacles on a course may include parallel rails, triple bars, water jumps and simulated stone walls. Jumping was the first Equestrian event to be included in an Olympic Games competition.

At the Olympic Games, horses must be at least age 8 to compete in Dressage and Eventing, and age 9 or more for the Jumping event.

Those of us who haven't got tickets will at least be able to enjoy TV coverage!

Diet and Supplements - horses for courses!

For centuries, horses thrived on natural supplements such as herbs and minerals then, almost 200 years ago, an 'equine tonic' was launched, starting a whole new industry.

Healthy horses with a good diet and exercise regime may not require specific attention but if you know your horse, you will know when it's under par. Some natural herbal remedies may give a boost when needed. Here are a few natural supplements that are commonly found:

• Nettles are rich in vitamin C, iron, sodium, protein and fibre. They may be helpful to horses with poor circulation, arthritis or rheumatism.
• Mint aids digestion, it's menthol is a useful anti-bacterium and anti-parasitic.
• Meadowsweet is an antacid that can relieve acid indigestion and treat diarrhoea. It is also an anti-inflammatory and pain-killer - an equine paracetamol equivalent.
• Garlic is good for the respiratory system and can reduce blood pressure. It is also useful for pain relief, has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties - and helps to repel flies!
• Seaweed is an excellent source of multi-vitamins.

As always, moderation is key. Seek expert advice before changing your horse's routine.

Tips for Horse Rug Care & Repair

• Wash Horse Rugs Regularly using an anti-bacterial, anti-irritant rug wash.
• Check for damage to the fabric. Iron-on patches may be used for small repairs; heavy duty blankets may require sewing.
• If a waterproof layer has been damaged, seek professional advice. Inadequate repairs may trap moisture and be detrimental to your horse's well-being.
• If surcingles, straps or buckles are damaged, seek professional advice.
• If necessary, reproof rugs to protect your horse and prolong the use of the rug. To test, drop a teaspoon of water onto the rug's surface - it should form 'beads' or run off but if it is absorbed, it should be water-proofed before the next shower.

Equestrian Trade Fair, NEC, this month

BETA International is the world’s leading trade fair for the equestrian, country clothing and pet product markets. This year, it takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 20 to 22 February.

An attraction on the opening day of the show is "An Audience with Martin Clunes and Monty Roberts" featuring TV's "Doc Martin" and the "Horsepower" horse whisperer as they address issues such as "Is it cool for modern man to love his horse?"
